Title: Drank my last bottle.
Category: hopeful
Blog Entry: 2006 El Alacran Alacran is Spanish for scorpion. The name memorializes a chaotic but amusing incident upon the first for-real picking of the grapes. We had spotted wood boxes the afternoon before and during the night some scorpions decided to take advantage of the shelter. During picking the next day the senoritas sorting out leaves and sub-par grapes met the scorpions and there was quite a commotion. For a while it looked like the work day was ending early, then some suitable gloves were found and the situation was calmed if not cured. With this background, how could the wine be anything but special? And it is. It is becoming the cult wine of Karly insiders. I have never tasted another wine like it. The flavor elements are cherry, licorice, truffle and bloody meat. With all this going on there has to be some spicy oak to integrate it, right? It is the only wine we make that is heavy on the oak. We keep the crop down to two plus tons per acre so this riot can be on display every year, so production is small and we must charge for our sacrifice. This 2006 is my favorite of the Alacrans since the first in 1997. The vines are now fifteen to twenty years old, and live only with nature’s irrigation. It shows in the bouquet and complex structure. This vintage defines fine. 196 cases produced.  So I polished off the last bottle. I know there has to be someone willing to share theirs with me! You'd think sleeping with the winemaker (ok so I'm his wife, but it sounds more wicked the other way!) I'd have some in's! Even my poor mother in law didn't get in on the cellaring of this one! And her name is on the bottle. All the Karly customers bought this up so fast I never put any substancial amount away. Next vintage is going to be different!  Good news! Pop just called and said he had a couple stored away for me...all is not lost. Life is good.
